Hallway Decorating Ideas For School
What do you get when back-to-school season converges with the start of fall decorating season? A really good reason to dress up your mantel.
Over the last few years there's been a surge in decorated, pin-worthy mantels that celebrate the start of the school year with strategically staged globes, school supplies and notebooks. Thankfully, this is a decorating trend that's easy on the wallet, and can be culled using items from around the home.
Check out five of our favorite back-to-school mantels:
For this mantelscape, Krista Aasen ofThe Happy Housie easily sourced school-related items — like vintage books and the spinning globe — from around her house and area yard sales.
A vintage frame fitted with black foam is re-purposed to look like a big chalkboard, and pages from an old dictionary are crafted into new bunting.

Melissa Quigley from Hollyhocks & Honeybees was inspired by "Hamilton" the musical when creating this year's mantel masterpiece.
Via an Instagram post about her mantel, Melissa said this: "From the minute I heard the song, "My Shot," I knew that is what I wanted my girls to take with them into this new school year. The idea of not wasting a single moment, to rise up when things get tough, seize every opportunity to make a difference, take a stand, be brave, try something new and most importantly believe in yourself."
Gretchen Black from Nesting in the Bluegrass created this mantel as a way to celebrate her three sons and the school year ahead.
Black used craft supplies like ruler ribbon, alphabet stickers and writing tab slips to personalize the design.

Jessica Ruhl from Dream & Differ created this family mantel as a way to get the family into a fall mindset and the "mood for learning." The chalkboard displays a lighthearted motto for the upcoming school year: "It's Latin for "Learn or Leave." She says: "I thought it set an appropriately encouraging tone for the upcoming year."

We like the understated approach of this mantel, created by Leanne Jacobs at Organize and Decorate Everything.
Books of various sizes were turned around so that the uniformity of the pages could be displayed.
A clipboard displays inspirational sayings and words of advice for kids heading back to school. Interested in getting this for your own kids? Print out your own copy, click here.
